“… A fabricação, que é o trabalho do homo faber, consiste em reificação. A solidez, inerente a todas as coisas, até mesmo as mais frágeis, resulta do material que foi trabalhado; mas esse mesmo material não é simplesmente dado e disponível, como os frutos do campo e das árvores, que podemos colher ou deixar em paz sem que com isso alteremos o reino da natureza. O material já é um produto das mãos humanas que o tiraram da sua localização natural, seja aniquilando um processo vital, como no caso da árvore que tem de ser destruída para que se obtenha a madeira, seja interrompendo algum dos processos mais lentos da natureza, como no caso do ferro, da pedra ou do mármore, arrancados do ventre da terra. Este elemento de violação e de violência está presente em todo processo de fabricação, e o homo faber, criador do artificio humano, sempre foi um destruidor da natureza.”

“… Manufacturing, which is the work of homo faber, consists of reification. The solidity inherent in all things, even the most fragile, results from the material that has been worked; but that same material is not simply given and available, like the fruits of the field and the trees, which we can harvest or leave alone without altering the realm of nature. The material is already a product of human hands that have taken it from its natural location, either by annihilating a vital process, as in the case of the tree that has to be destroyed in order to obtain wood, or by interrupting some of nature's slower processes, as in the case of iron, stone or marble, torn from the bowels of the earth. This element of violation and violence is present in every manufacturing process, and homo faber, the creator of human artifice, has always been a destroyer of nature.
