José Paulo Ferro - Entre Nuvens (ceci n’est pas….que dessin)
Nesta exposição de desenhos, José Paulo Ferro confronta-nos com a questão que o modernismo levantou entre figuração e abstração, e que em grande medida condicionou a sua opção, nos finais dos anos 70 do século passado, quando decidiu seguir o curso de pintura e não o de design ou arquitectura.
No parêntesis do título parafraseia-se René Magritte na frase pintada em “A Traição das Imagens” que diz: “Ceci n’est pas une Pipe”. O cachimbo não é um cachimbo é uma imagem de um cachimbo, uma representação, um exercício de pintura, o cachimbo é apenas um pretexto para o pintor.
Entre Nuvens, é assim, um conjunto de desenhos figurativos ou abstratos geométricos, (realizados entre 2016 e 2024) em que as formas (sejam nuvens sejam círculos) são apenas pretextos para o exercício do desenho usando a grafite como médium. Nestes trabalhos, e porque são desenhos, a linha determina toda a construção e a sua concretização na acumulação dos milhões de linhas que criam as manchas e os claros/escuros. São os traços e as linhas que nos permitem ver, ou inventar o que vemos, nas formas que surgem num céu com nuvens ou nos planetas, eclipses ou vazios em que se materializam os círculos.
No Sec. XVI o artista e filósofo renascentista português, Francisco de Holanda, escreveu uma frase definitiva muito citada por J.P.F.: ''O desenho, a que por outro nome chamam debuxo, nele consiste e é a fonte e o corpo da pintura e da escultura e da arquitetura e de todo outro género de pintar e a raiz de todas as ciências."
In this exhibition of drawings, José Paulo Ferro confronts us with the question that modernism raised between figuration and abstraction, and which to a large extent conditioned his choice at the end of the 1970s when he decided to study painting rather than design or architecture.
The parenthesis in the title paraphrases René Magritte in the phrase painted in ‘The Betrayal of Images’ which reads: ‘Ceci n'est pas une Pipe’. The pipe is not a pipe, it is an image of a pipe, a representation, an exercise in painting, the pipe is just a pretext for the painter.
Entre Nuvens is a set of figurative or abstract geometric drawings (realised between 2016 and 2024) in which the shapes (whether clouds or circles) are just pretexts for drawing using graphite as a medium. In these works, and because they are drawings, the line determines the entire construction and its realisation in the accumulation of millions of lines that create the stains and the light/dark. It is the strokes and lines that allow us to see, or invent what we see, in the shapes that appear in a sky with clouds or in the planets, eclipses or voids in which circles materialise.
In the 16th century, the Portuguese Renaissance artist and philosopher, Francisco de Holanda, wrote a definitive phrase much quoted by J.P.F.: ‘Drawing, which by another name they call debuxo, consists of and is the source and body of painting and sculpture and architecture and every other kind of painting and the root of all sciences.’
